On Thursday, Delhi-NCR experienced strong tremors as the earth shook once again due to an earthquake, leaving residents feeling the ground shake for an extended period. The earthquake, which also affected Punjab, Chandigarh, and Jammu and Kashmir, prompted people to evacuate homes and offices. Fortunately, there have been no reports of casualties or property damage at present.

The epicenter of the earthquake was identified in Faizabad, Afghanistan, registering an intensity of 6.2 on the Richter scale in the Hindukush region. The seismic activity was not limited to India; neighboring Pakistan also felt the strong tremors. Images from the region depict people hastily leaving their residences and workplaces in response to the earthquake.

Tremors Reach South of Pir Panchal Area: Additionally, the southern part of the Pir Panchal area in Poonch district, Jammu and Kashmir, experienced the effects of the earthquake. The seismic waves extended beyond borders, reaching Pakistan. The widespread impact underscores the unpredictable nature of such natural occurrences.

Ongoing Earthquake Warnings: Experts had previously issued warnings about potential earthquakes in Delhi-NCR, emphasizing the region’s vulnerability to seismic activities. Delhi-NCR is situated atop more than 100 long and deep faults, including those on the Delhi-Haridwar Ridge, Delhi-Sargodha Ridge, and the Great Boundary Fault. Numerous active faults are interconnected, raising concerns about the possibility of a major earthquake, the timing of which remains uncertain.

Understanding Earthquakes: Scientifically, earthquakes are linked to the Earth’s structure, where tectonic plates, floating on liquid lava beneath the Earth’s surface, play a crucial role. These plates often collide, leading to bending at their corners. When the pressure becomes excessive, the plates fracture, allowing the energy from below to escape. This process results in seismic disturbances, ultimately causing earthquakes.

While the recent earthquake did not result in significant damage, it serves as a reminder of the seismic risks faced by regions like Delhi-NCR. Continued vigilance, preparedness, and adherence to safety measures remain crucial in minimizing the potential impact of future seismic events.
