The Roll-on/Roll-off (RoRo) ferry service connecting Bhayander and Vasai has been inaugurated, revolutionizing travel in the region.

This service drastically reduces the travel distance of 32 km, typically taking 90 minutes by road, to a mere 20 minutes.

The Maharashtra Maritime Board has entrusted Suvarnadurg Shipping and Marine Services Pvt Ltd with managing this RoRo service on a trial basis for three months.

Key Features of the Service:

The vessel boasts a capacity to carry passenger loads of up to 250 tonnes and can accommodate 100 passengers and 33 four-wheelers simultaneously.

Inauguration and Officials’ Remarks:

PM Modi Dahej RoRo

Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Rajan Vichare inaugurated the RoRo service on Tuesday, February 20, emphasizing the importance of inland waterways projects.

Vichare highlighted the government’s approval, under Nitin Gadkari’s tenure, for the construction of 12 jetties initially across five municipal corporations in MMR to bolster inland water transport.

Challenges and Solutions:

The project faced obstacles such as the denial of Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) permission for the Vasai Jetty, necessitating a change in location.

Additionally, the demolition of an old railway bridge near the Bhayander jetty and the relocation of a pipeline along the railway were required, with support from the BMC.

Expansion and Operations:

This marks the second RoRo service in the MMR, following the initial route from Ferry Wharf to Mandwa Jetty in the Raigad district.

The service will operate 16 daily trips, covering the 1.89 nautical miles between Bhayander and Vasai.

Commencing from 6:45 am from Vasai, the last ferry departs Bhayander at 7:30 pm.

Fare Structure:

The fares have been fixed at Rs 30 for adult passengers, Rs 15 for children, Rs 60 for two-wheelers, and Rs 180 for cars, making it an affordable option for commuters.
